Haptic & Kinaesthetic Sculpture Meets Embodied Practice
Made by Live Particle
The Live Particle Somatosensory Kit was created to support mental, physical, and creative health through multimodal play. It caters to kinaesthetic, multi-sensory and non-verbal sensibilities promoting overall wellbeing. The Kit provides a variety of boxes and bags filled with handcrafted objects. The objects invite lush tactile experiences, dynamic movement play, pattern and sculpture making as well as physiological inquiry. Spending time with this unique kit fosters embodied awareness which in turn grows emotional self-regulation, self-efficacy, healthy physical activity and readiness for learning.
Below is a discussion contextualising the kit, and a collection of educational resources to activate it.
Where possible objects are made from sustainably sourced, respectfully gathered, upcycled and preloved materials. Other parts of the kits are sourced from companies with a sustainable ethic and for their durability.
Contextualising the Kit
Why this work matters
The somatic nervous system, part of the peripheral nervous system, travels throughout the whole of your body delivering information from your senses to your brain.
The Live Particle Somatosensory Kit provides a variety of sensory objects to engage senses and encourage this dynamic flow of information. Attuning to your movement, touch, inner sensations, and the environment, connects you to the intelligence alive in your cells.
Movement, touch and sound are human nutrients. They affect how you develop, grow and relate, and positively impact healthy living. This kinaesthetic, multi-sensory and often non-verbal experience is essential for survival and can profoundly shift state, change mood and ignite creativity.
How somatosensory objects work
Each objects’ shape, scale, density, texture, colour, malleability, and how you move and interact with them, enlivens different aspects of you and informs your experience. Objects metaphorically reference a system or organ within you, like bones or connective tissue. They also represent fundamental principles that inform your world such as fluidity, interconnected networks and tensile structures. Learning about these principles and how they are already living systems within you, is a powerful way to self soothe, cultivate resilience, develop skilful relating and grow healthy living.
Where to use the kit
Developed through professional practice, the kit is used in both wellbeing and educational settings. The activities promote emotional regulation through experiential learning and teach fundamental wellbeing concepts and life processes. Visual and written resources accompany each object collection for inspired play and deeper learning.
There are two versions of the kit:
Somatosensory Kit: Wellbeing (small, for one-on-one or small group use)
Somatosensory Kit: Classroom (larger, for whole class activities)
